New to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or MMA?
You do not need to: • Be fit • Have experience • Want to compete You just need to start. Your 1st session will see you involved in the main class partnered up with an experienced student. The goal is to guide you through your first class safely and to let you understand not only the techniques you are being shown but also experiencing our gym culture. You will not be expected to do complex moves or hard sparring. You will be guided through the class in a way that allows you to see what we do daily but in a manner that allows you to stop and observe or take a break if needed. Your first class is making sure you understand what we do and that we are the right fit for each other. Rather than the chaotic environment that some may worry they are walking into, our classes are structured and calm. Training intensity can increase without the need for injury or hurting one another. Full contact sports all carry risks but we try to deliver our knowledge in the safest manner possible.
Kids Training
Parents read carefully.…. Our kids classes are designed to •Increase confidence •Build real self-defence skills •Improve fitness •Reduce screen time •Bully-proof your child What not to expect •No paid for regular gradings •No tying contracts •No unrealistic techniques Our children’s program runs from 7-13years old and has the same ethos as our main classes, in that we strive to make your child a capable martial artist. Everything we teach is realistic for self-defence and competition if you child decides to compete. Fitness is an important aspect of the training and a focus on body weight exercises alongside technical training is designed to help your child grow into a strong healthy adult. Currently we only offer Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and No Gi Grappling classes for children. It is the base for self-defence and also means no striking to the head at an age where the child’s brain is in a crucial time of development. It also means that the kids can spar and train hard, with minimal risk of injury.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Our BJJ classes are taught by Coach Stephen Fairbairn who is a Black belt under Peter Irving and Crezio De Souza. A lineage that goes directly back to Carlson Gracie. Our philosophy of Itaipava Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is that it is a fighting martial art grounded in self-defence roots. While we compete in sports Jiu Jitsu competitions and look at BJJ in the context of a sport, we also recognise that for us self defence is a priority and being able to apply our BJJ style in an MMA context is important. Our style revolves around top pins and top control leading to submission holds. Learning to recognise that being on your back is not realistic way to use grappling in MMA or self defence. Having said that, guard development and using it to sweep and submit is a large part of our curriculum. Understanding how to technically be able to escape bad positions on the ground when being held by bigger stronger opponents and getting back to the feet or a top pinning position is the foundation of our style. We do not offer seperate training for beginners outside of our beginners course. All of our students train together to share our combined knowledge and help develop beginners and those less skilled in a safe and controlled environment. You do not have to be a competitor to learn BJJ nor do you have to be an athlete or in shape. The training will get you fit for the art and everyone starts at the beginning. Progression happens at your own pace. Although there are belt gradings in BJJ our emphasis is on the training and not the belt. Promotions come when the individual is ready and is not based on time on the mat. One of the common questions I am asked is “how long will it take me to get my black belt?” My answer is always the same… ‘As long as it takes’ We offer training in the traditional kimono or Gi as it is known and also without. My advice is to try both and even if you prefer one to the other, to be a complete grappler it is advisable to train both.
Top-Tier MMA Training Awaits
Our MMA training is a complete system of striking and grappling combined. Gone are the days of training at different schools to learn different disciplines, then trying to stick it all together. MMA is a sport of transitions. Not separating skillsets but linking them together systematically. Our classes are mostly made up of live drills. Working technique for technique with your training partners. When skill level is sufficient you will then move onto sparring. Sparring can be a mix of full rounds to isolated positions or scenarios. The pace of the class usually flows and is more fitness based. A great way to build up cardiovascular strength and muscular endurance. You do not need to be a fighter to participate in this kind of training, in fact the vast majority of students do not fight or compete. However will will support and help build anyone who is in the mind to compete at any level.
